HALF DAY LIMA CITY TOUR
We will begin the visit of the city with an exploration of Colonial Lima.
First, we will stop off at the Main Square, to explore it on foot and admire the exteriors of the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the City Hall, all examples of Lima's still-present colonial architectural opulence. We will visit the Cathedral; as walking through its numerous chapels, we'll discover various architectural styles and learn about the religious history of Peru. We will continue with the visit to San Francisco Convent built in the 17th century, and its “Catacombs” ancient underground cemetery of Lima. Then, we will visit Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion that currently holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited private residence in the Southern Hemisphere. Finally, we will begin a journey through the streets of modern Lima as head toward the most traditional of the residential zones of the capital: San Isidro, the heart of the city's financial district; and Miraflores, a perfect spot to enjoy wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. LIMA/CUSCO/SACRED VALLEY
Breakfast at the hotel
Private transfer from Hotel to Lima´s airport with your guide. The group will reconvene at the Cusco airport, from where we will continue the trip toward the Sacred Valley. In the Sacred Valley we will reach Pisac, a beautiful place where Incan and Colonial influences have reached a perfect balance and created the unique way of life of the local inhabitants. After that, on the banks of the Urubamba River, in the Sacred Valley, is the Sarapampa hacienda, a farm which for three generations has been dedicated to the production of Cusco’s giant white corn—a unique variety that has become an unexpected hit with Trader Joe’s. At this historic hacienda, we will be welcomed by members of the Sumar family, the owners of the property. They will open the doors of their great house, and under their guidance we will immerse ourselves in the rural life of a typical hacienda—a tradition that has been disappearing in recent years—and learn more about the cultivating of Cusco’s giant white corn. This variety is only grown in the local area, as a product of ancestral rural traditions and ancient agricultural expertise. We will enjoy a culinary experience that draws upon traditional local cuisine and the rich farming heritage of the Sacred Valley. But this is not a restaurant. The gathering around the table—and the visit in general—feels more like a family event, like visiting the home of relatives in Cusco. Overnight: Sacred Valley Meals : Breakfast /Lunch |
Day 4 - June 22
HALF DAY SACRED VALLEY/WEAVING WORKSHOP/PACHAMANCA LUNCH
This morning, we will head toward the Sacred Valley; about 17 miles away from Cusco, we will find Chinchero village, famous for the extraordinary beauty and quality of its textiles, and for its Sunday fair, where local people dress in traditional colorful outfits and travel down from their villages to trade their goods. We will walk along its traditional alleyways, next to our guide, and visit the weavers’ workshop of Nilda Callañaupa, who in 1996 decided to bring together like-minded women who shared her passion for weaving, and in time was able to motivate younger women who had lost interest in weaving to learn from their elders and connect once more with this ancestral art. This visit will be greatly enriched with the explanation of the protagonist of this story, Nilda Callañaupa. Then, we will head towards the Salt Pans of Maras., the sight of this still-operating salt mine, in use since Incan times. The journey will continue until we reach the archaeological site of Moray. Used as an agricultural testing ground, the site's system of circular terraces descends 490 feet (150 m) from where we will stand, serving as a perfect testament to the level of advancement achieved by the Incas, who excelled at building masterful constructions in harmony with nature. We will finish the day with a delicious Pachamanca at Casa Iskay Overnight: Sacred Valley Meals : Breakfast/Lunch |
